It’s so hard to say goodbye.

We know we will have to at some point.

Everyone must die.

But we go through life hoping we go first, or it’s decades away, or simply pretending the day won’t actually come.

But it does.

I had to say goodbye to a beloved aunt last week.

Here are a few great things about my aunt Diane:

Our annual tradition of Lefse Wednesday is all thanks to her. Diane taught us how to make lefse in her Fergus Falls kitchen years ago and we still follow her recipe today. She created a lasting legacy, as Lefse Wednesday is a favorite among my children, and we all love eating soft, fresh, homemade lefse.

Thank you, Diane.

There are so many stories of the people she cared for and her heart for the elderly. Giving rides, bringing them flowers, taking them to church. After my husband died, she showed her love and care for my kids and I in two practical ways:

She cared for our dog and she sent us cards.

I’ve never had to board my dog even with three kids in hockey and a love of travel. I knew my aunt and uncle would take Lincoln every time. He’s a special dog. Adam picked him out and he joined our family the last year of Adam’s life. He’s been my constant companion and I’m so grateful Adam got him for us.

My aunt Diane would schedule pick up and drop offs at the Perkins in Fergus. Even when the schedules were less than convenient, she and Ron would always be in the parking lot waiting. I’d get photo updates of Lincoln’s time with them. He loved riding on their pontoon and Diane would take him to see nursing home residents. I never had to worry about him because they took such loving care of our Lincoln. Their house has been his vacation home.

Second, she mailed me cards. Almost weekly. Nothing long or difficult to write. Just sweet cards with a little reminder that she loves us and is praying for us and is ready for Lincoln again any time. Four years later, she was still mailing me cards.

What a wonderful woman. Rest in peace, Aunt Diane. I love you.
