A-Frame Getaway in Crosby, MN.

I recently shared about fun times at Victual in the small town of Crosby, Minnesota. It wasn’t my first time there. I took my kids for our first Memorial Day weekend trip in 2022 as a family of four.

We survived the first anniversary of my husband’s sudden death and then I packed up my kids and headed to Crosby, determined to enjoy the long weekend together. I booked us an adorable A-frame cabin called Hilhaus. It was perfect because while most Minnesotans spend their weekends at the lake - boating, tubing, swimming, I couldn’t take all that on by myself.

So, a quaint A-frame outside of town with access to amazing restaurants and a swimming beach in town, along with the famous Cuyuna red dirt bike trails made this just the ticket. There was a brief period while biking where I thought we were lost. My older two got separated from me and phone service was bad. I questioned my intelligence as a parent taking three kids on mountain bike trails alone. But we pulled through, found each other, persevered on a hard trail we took by accident and made it out the other side.

The coziness of that space was just what we needed. We had campfires until the mosquitos drove us inside. We ate, swam, fished, biked, and I drank a little whiskey. It was a beautiful weekend even though it was hard.

Being a single parent is hard. Doing all the packing and unpacking and remembering all the things is hard. I’d never traveled with bikes. I borrowed a bike rack and stood on a stool to get them all on my car. Tears were shed as I fought to get them on and off knowing my 6’2” husband could have done it with ease.

But we made memories and I was so proud we used that long Memorial weekend to get away. Everyone says they want to go back. Hilhaus, we just might come again.

We’re a little bigger and stronger. Ready for the trails and another adventure.
